Benefits Of Green Tea

People have been drinking tea forever, and the Chinese have long believed in the healing properties as well as preventive nature of tea. Recently, even some in the medical community have embraced the healing benefits of green tea. It is being touted as offering benefits to those suffering from cancer, arthritis, high cholesterol, heart disease and infection. While the exact process of healing is still under study, few in the east and now the west dispute the benefits of green tea.

Green Tea Benefits

Research has shown that catechin polyphenols contained in the tea is a catalyst for the benefits of green tea. Serving as anti-oxidants, they help promote the immune system fight off certain ailments. It is more prevalent in green tea mainly to due to the way it is processed. Black teas and oolong tea is often fermented, which can reduce the benefits of the polyphenols. However, the benefit of green tea is preserved through steaming the leaves, allowing them to maintain the properties of the polyphenols.

The tea is consumed through various methods such as in hot tea and ice tea and depending on the process can be as strong, or stronger than black or oolong teas. Numerous companies are taking advantage of new information about the benefits of green tea as they rush to meet consumer demand for the product being touted as a health benefit.

Prevention Qualities

Countries in which the benefits of green tea have long been used, strengthen research that show how some countries where a high fat diet have fewer incidences of heart disease than those in countries where drinking green tea has not been as prevalent. Additionally, the effects of smoking, which often manifests as cancer, has not bee seen as frequently in drinkers of green tea.

Green tea has also been shown to help prevent food poisoning, and this quality is being considered as a method of reducing tooth decay. The properties in the tea kill the bacteria that often cause tooth decay. Another of the benefits of green tea is its use as a diet supplement to help with weight loss. Combined with caffeine, research has shown those who consume this combination burn calories faster than those who drink only caffeine and are on a calorie-limited diet.

Side Effects

The only side effect of green tea is its caffeine content. Although about half the amount of caffeine is present in the tea as in the same serving of coffee, the benefits of green tea appear to outweigh the effect of keeping the user awake.
